Definitions of Nutrition

  1. Nutrition (also called nourishment or aliment) is the provision, to cells and organisms, of the materials necessary (in the form of food) to support life. Many common health problems can be prevented or alleviated with a healthy diet.
  2. From a physiological point of view, nutrition is the organic process of nourishing or being nourished, that is, the processes by which an organism assimilates food and of the manner in which the separate components are used for maintenance, repair (healing of damaged tissues), growth, and reproduction. To varying degrees, anxiety disorders can be affected by nutritional issues.
  3. Nutriments are the source of materials to nourish the body whereas nutrition is the scientific study of food and drink, that is, the materials that nourish an organism (especially in humans). Nutrition involves digestion of food, absorption, storage and use of nutrients, and excrement of waste through urine or bowel movements. When a body becomes ill, nutritional medicine calls for higher, therapeutic doses of basic nutrients to address illnesses and disorders. It is effective in addressing diseases of deficiency that may be caused by poor diet or extreme environmental factors.
